System architecture

Dark Sky® lighting Management System offers a sophisticated lighting control system, developed from a whole system approach, grouping the entire system into a logical hierarchy, from the city, to the street and control-device level. This ensures that you have a “zoom” to adjust the view over each unit, or at any every level, within the system.

Core of the system, is a point to multipoint mesh networking technology, based on a three tier architecture, incorporating the luminaire controller, the area controller, and centralized web server and MySQL Database.

The luminaire controller, typically installed within the luminaire, facilitates the controlling and monitoring, of each individual luminaire. Each controller or electronic “all in one “ control gear, supplies a dimmable output well suited for High pressure Sodium, Ceramic Metal Halide, Compact HID or LED-based luminaire.

The savings

 The true cost of the light you buy, is the sum of three elements: initial capital cost, energy consumed and maintenance, usually energy is the largest item. Dark system will save significant amounts of energy, compared to older alternative technologies. In other words this means:
 - 48 % saving in energy costs;

 - High system efficiency to save energy;

 - Increasing, to the level of a single each luminaire, the power factor up to 0,99;
 - Lowering of lamp high inrush current;
 - An extended lamp life due to soft ignition and control of electrical and thermal stresses;
 - Every day the correct operating time calculated on the basis of sunrise, sunset timings and the season, to determine when it has to be switched on or turned off;
 - Lights are dimmed during low traffic hours to save energy or enhanced in problematic neighborhoods to improve safety;
 - A smart meter accurately calculates the energy consumption, taking into account the varying rates and automatically bills all entities with a full web based report.

An action program for new and existing luminaries

The “Dark Sky®” lighting telemanagement system: the lighting control, according to CEN/TR13201-1 and EN 13201 - 2/3/4 or UNI 10439 or DIN 5044 and ISO 50001 EMS standards is only possible if there are the best safety conditions for road users.

The Dark Sky ® networked control can continuously vary the light output from 0 to 100%, monitoring and controlling the amount of efficient light at the right place, at the right time, providing energy reporting.

Energy telemanagement and monitoring systems

Progetto Energia provides a telemanagement system for monitoring, controlling, metering and managing outdoor lighting through a web-based software.
Based on new technologies, it saves energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, improves outdoor lighting reliability and lowers the maintenance cost.
Each individual light point can be switched off/on or dimmed at any time. Operating state, energy consumption and failures are reported and stored in a database with exact timestamp and geographical
location. All the received information is stored on dedicated servers making the data available for longterm evaluations like energy analysis, lamp life time forecasting, problem detection, etc.

Progetto Energia helps public lighting managers to assure the right lighting level on streets while improving reliability of outdoor lighting and reducing operating costs.
Due to its architecture Progetto Energia makes the public lighting network part of the internet, enabling to do anything whatever possible with modern web based applications. By using electronic powerline comunication EN 500-65 1 FSK each luminarie is individually controlled, monitored and manipulated to save energy and increase the streets safety level increasing the power factor till 0,99. Each lamp can be step-less dimmed individually, depending on the day, the traffic and climatic conditions. In periods when the traffic is low the need for light is lower, according to EN13201/2/ 3/ 4 and the illumination level can be reduced.

Here are some standard operations:
1. The constant control of the state of the equipment and the safety of the entire plant, in particular it measures:
1. The active energy (total and for each phase);
2. The reactive energy (overall and for each phase);
3. The cosφ (the power factor);
4. The active, reactive and total power (overall and for each phase);
5. Any imbalances and malfunctions of the cable distribution system;
6.The unique identification of faulty components (each plant and each armor are equipped with a code that uniquely identifies them);
7. The monitoring and recording on graphical diagrams.

The European Union approved tougher energy-saving rules while pursuing a separate plan to limit their impact on demand for allowances to discharge carbon dioxide in the world's biggest emissions-trading market. The European Parliament endorsed a draft law that will require energy distributors to save 1.5 percent of their sale volumes annually. The legislation will also force central governments in the 27-nation EU to refurbish at least 3 percent of their buildings to higher efficiency standards every year. The bloc's national governments have already signalled support for the law, making their final approval a formality in coming weeks.
